| An unfortunate coincidence of the World Trade Center attack of Sept. 11, 2001, is that in New York City, Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) or paramedics apparently are a part of the New York City Fire Department. In many parts of the country, EMTs are a separate organization. In any event, EMTs are "first responders," along with police officers and firefighters, when tragedy strikes. As much as police officers and firefighters, EMTs "rush in" as victims "rush out" of dangerous situations. However, because EMTs are a part of the New York City Fire Department, I'm afraid they have not received the recognition as heroes that they surely deserve. There is no doubt in my mind that some of the FDNY personnel who rushed into the World Trade Center and died on Sept. 11, were EMTs who were rushing in to treat the injured. There is also no doubt in my mind that EMTs save lives every day in this country and that they are real heroes. J. Al Cannon Jr., Sheriff Charleston County, SC Wednesday August 21, 2002 |
